Dancehall emerged in Jamaica in the late 1970s and developed from reggae music and culture. The dance follows the "riddim" – that's what the driving beat or rhythm of a song is called in dancehall. This riddim dictates every move: sometimes fast and powerful, sometimes soft and flowing. Typical are clear, expressive moves, plenty of attitude and a huge dose of joie de vivre – a style that brings pure energy to the dance floor.
